Let's get on the road !

General info

What are the Roads Like in Bali?

On this page, we will try to inform you about Road Trips Roads and Routes, in a most objective way possible, so you can decide if driving in Bali would fit you.

To start this information page with the fact that Indonesia, and hence Bali, applies the left-hand traffic regulation. It takes some time to get used to it. But believe me, once you have to adapt, it is a piece of cake. Just drive slow, after 30 minutes it will feel like the new normal. I learned that it is a brain setting, as soon as your brain is resect you will go with the flow. The benefit is that once you have done it it will be riding a bike, you always feel familiar with it for the rest of your life.

Roads & Google

If you Google on the internet, you will find different information from experiences. Most of the time, when you look deeper into this information, you will see that the older the info is the worst the advice is. We have lived in Bali for more than 30 years and have experienced it. But we also saw the progress.

So if you see modern Indonesia nowadays, you will see that there are big investments in infrastructure made and still in progress. Specially, the current president has made this a high priority. Also, Bali experience the benefit of this program. Roads have been immensely improved in the last 5 years. New toll roads are built, roads are designed better and renewed. Some big projects are still under development, as the new toll road from Gilimanuk to Mengwi and the road from Mengwi to Singaraja

Roads conditions

Road signs are replaced and will provide correct information, and finally, Google Maps is working perfect all over Bali, it is not really a road project, but it makes driving in Bali effortless. It brings me, without any problems, even to the most remote area’s of Bali. So 99% of the roads you will travel on our road trips are in top condition. We know because we travelled them our self.

But to be complete with this information we need to point to the fact that in more rural areas, roads sometimes can be bumpy, and have random hazards. For Balinese people, the road in local villages is part of their daily life. So, plenty of things still happen on the road. Specially outside the main roads, you will find parked vehicles, livestock, and religious processions on the road. This is normal for them. But we believe this makes travelling in Bali a unique experience.

The average speed is low (about 35 km/h) so there is no hurry and if you adapt to that you will see. Driving is a Piece of cake

Routes

My Bali Road Trip did travel all the Road Trip roads and routes by here self. We put all this information together in our Personal Digital Travel Guide. Sometimes you cannot just follow Google Maps from A to B. Google Maps does not see if someone is travelling on a motorbike or car. So sometimes it can happen that Google Maps will give you the quickest way from A to B, but that road is not always the best road to travel by car. Routes can be half paved (2 concrete lanes or in a bad condition). We will advise you daily in your Personal Digital Travel Guide with suggestions to plan your route for that day.

Help is on the way

During our meet & greet, we will inform advise you on how to plan your trip in the best way. But believe me, at the end of the day, you will get there and a have a new experience. Balinese people are very helpful and enjoy the effort you take to discover “their” part of Bali. Do not be surprised if they invite you to their home to meet their family.

If you have questions about this subject, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are there for you. Before, during and after your trip.
